We recorded the auditory steady-state field in each hemisphere independently and evaluated the binaural interaction in normal-hearing subjects and patients with hearing impairment. In normal-hearing subjects ipsilateral input was suppressed more than contralateral input under binaural condition and there was no effect of sound intensity. In patients with hearing impairment binaural suppression for impaired-ear input was smaller than that for intact-ear input or those observed in healthy subjects. This finding suggests that a status of impaired-ear input was elevated compared to intact-ear input.
